Permanent Contracts to be Given to JSS Intern Teachers Starting July in Kenya

A budget of Sh8.3 billion has been allocated by Parliament of Kenya to hire around 26,000 intern teachers on a permanent and pensionable basis starting from July 1, 2024.

On January 1, 2025, the National Assembly’s Committee on Education has overturned the plan of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to recruit Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers in kenya.

According to the Chair of the committee, Julius Melly, the TSC will hire interns in July of 2024 instead of January of the following year, as stated during the Budget and Appropriations Committee (BAC) meeting.

According to Mr. Melly’s submissions to the Budget and Appropriations Commission (BAC), there is a need for the Teachers Service Commission to improve the recruitment process in the upcoming fiscal year. This will ensure that the allocated resources for this task are effectively utilized.

The presence of Mr Melly was noted as he presented to the committee in defense of the budget allocated for the Ministry of Education for the fiscal year 2024/25.

In addition, the committee must transition the 26,000 interns to full-time positions starting in July 2024 instead of the proposed date of January 2025.

The TSC is expected to complete within six months the task of assessing the staff norm requirements for primary, junior, and senior schools in order to determine the ideal number of teachers needed for future resource allocation, as requested by the committee.

During a meeting led by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Mr Melly informed the BAC that the TSC will need a budget of Sh8.3 billion to transition 26,000 interns to permanent and pensionable positions starting on July 1, 2024.

According to his statement, the Ministry will need an extra amount of Sh4.68 billion in the fiscal year 2024/25 to hire 20,000 more intern teachers.
